Released in 2012, An Uncommon King is the documentary film about Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, current holder of the Shambhala Buddhist lineage and son of the trail blazing Tibetan teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Filmed over a 17 year period in Tibet, India, China and North America, the film follows the story of this great spiritual teacher from his birth in a refugee camp in India to assuming the leadership of Shambhala, an international community of meditation centres and practitioners. An Uncommon King is a story of enlightened rulership. It invites the viewer to contemplate how the ancient teachings, which recognize our inherent goodness and wisdom, might hold the key to creating a good human society.
“The vivid imagery and the lucid narrative of the documentary, written by Johanna Lunn, tell in lively fashion, one of the most interesting stories in the development of Tibetan Buddhism in the West.”
– Stephen Pederson, The Chronicle Herald.
